is a conceptual art and research project that reframes traditional BDSM modalities using the aesthetics and ecologies of plant life.

SACRED SADISM

This framework was developed by artist Genevieve Belleveau in 2014. Upon moving to Los Angeles she was inspired to create a line of impact play tools made of high quality fake plant materials. She began exploring these concepts through performance, photography, video and deepening her personal experiences in BDSM and power exchange.

When she met her partner, artist Themba Alleyne, he was already experimenting with creating BDSM tools and offered his woodworking skills to collaborate on the line of implements Genevieve had been imagining. In February 2018 they began offering these unique, plant-like impact objects and insertables for purchase and the current iteration of Sacred Sadism was born.

Their project reframes traditional BDSM modalities using the aesthetics and ecologies of plant life; exploring systems of domination on both micro and macro scales. By questioning hierarchies between humans and so-called "nature", they break down the nuances of power exchange that dictate our daily lives and interpersonal intimacy.
